Novella – The Unmarketable Stories

by kalbzayn on October 19, 2007

That story that I am working on has a rough estimate of 25 planned scenes (with me knowing what is supposed to happen in about half of them so far).

Each of those scenes is expected to be between 1000-1500 words. I’m a big fan of short chapters.

Let’s break out the old calculator. That would end up being 25,000 to 37,500 if public education has done anything for me.

That, my friends, is what we call a novella, otherwise known as the unbook. Nobody sells novellas. It’s a silly, ridiculous, stupid length…that I actually enjoy reading. If they are really good, you can plow through in a day. Even if you take your time, you are looking at less than a week.

But seriously, why would anybody in their right mind write a novella these days. One little perk for me personally is that since there probably won’t be a market, I can just write the story and not worry about who will end up reading it. I need a lot more practice writing before I even begin to think about sending out letters begging people to print my stories.

Also, if I decide to publish it online, it is a good length to jam into one PDF file and, if I really keep the chapters between 1000-1500, it would be good to publish like a serial story on this here website. One page a week for about half a year. Or 3 times a week for a couple months. Or something like that.

For the record, I’m not the only person that likes these crazy stories. Leopold McGinnis has a couple novellas (and a full length novel) for sale on his website. Bad Attitude is his most recent novella and is a good story. If I had to choose between the two on his site, I would recommend The Red Fez, though. The plot is much more entertaining in my opinion.

Make it a YA or an erotica and you’ll have no trouble selling it as a novella. ;) Hmm, isn’t it amazing how you’ve done all of this work and you’re willing to let a calculator stop you in your tracks? Shame on you — get back to writing that story!

Oh, and happy Friday. ;)

I’m definitely not letting the word count bum me out or slow me down. Who knows, maybe something will evolve and stretch it out. If not, it will be a fun, and much shorter project that will take you less time to proof read….(there, that ought to prevent any other people from telling me to get back to writing :) )
