Nut has a squirrel

by kalbzayn on December 12, 2006

My son has a funny thing that he says every now and then. “Nut has a squirrel.”

Once upon a time, in the old Kalbzayn blog, I ran a flash fiction contest about something my daughter said one time. “There’s a barbecue in my nose.”

Funny sentences like that amuse me and make me want to work them into a story. When I heard, “Nut has a squirrel,” I just knew it needed to find its way into some fiction.

I also made a soft commitment to only myself to enter something for Shimmer Magazine’s, The Pirate Issue that I learned about from The Struggling Writer.

I had no ideas for either story other than wanting to write them both. Then, it hit me one day. They are the same story.

I am about 2/3 of the way through the ultra-rough draft. I’m not sure if my son’s line will actually show up, but the entire framework for the story is inspired by the line and it just might be the pirate story with the least amount of action ever. Look for it in Shimmer Magazine’s Pirate Issue in the summer of 2007. Unless, of course, they don’t want to publish it. In that case it will probably show up here much earlier.

Mike,
Good luck with getting into the Pirate Issue. I’m planning on submitting something as well.

Oh great. I was hoping nobody else would enter and they would have to take my story :)

Good luck.
