Potential way to make money with fiction online

I was watching Scrubs tonight and started cracking up with the way they promoted a CD of Corinne Bailey Rae’s. I happen to really enjoy the songs of hers that I have heard on the radio. She has a neat voice. Yes, that is an affiliate link through Amazon. All of those facts will be slightly important in a minute.

It was pretty funny how they blatantly worked it in. It made me wonder how much money they made for it or whether they were just making fun of the whole product placement thing. It also reminded me of the Wayne’s World movies.

I’m guessing they got paid for it. Which made me wonder if something like that might work for a writers.

Let’s imagine something like an online serialized novel with a couple characters and the Smart phone. Maybe a BlackBerry. In each section they can use their BlackBerry to get important information that gets them out of trouble or helps them in some other way that only a BlackBerry can.

Now, the story itself would have to kick ass or nobody would want to read it. But, if the story rocked, would the makers of the BlackBerry be interested in doing a little deal with the site. If not, the author could add some affiliate links that would help readers buy BlackBerry’s and then the author would get a percentage of each sale.

If anybody is interested in having me write an online serialized story for their product, let me know. I would prefer some free samples so that I can really get to know the inner workings of the product, though. I have some great ideas for a story about BMWs or vacation property in Hawaii.

Anyway, those are the kinds of things I think about while watching product placement ads on Scrubs.
