Tad Williams – Otherland 2 – River of Blue Fire

by kalbzayn on January 25, 2007

During my recent vacation I read a couple books. One of them was Tad Williams’ Otherland Volume Two: River of Blue Fire.

I read book one of the series close to two years ago and the only other Williams book that I read was Tailchaser’s Song which I loved.

This book was slightly painful. Most of the plot takes place in virtual cyber worlds. In my opinion there is too much jumping around from world to world. This results in Williams spending too much time just showing each world and the characters’ initial reaction to the world.

I also think there are too many characters and too many plot lines. I’m sure it made it fun to write, but any time you end up with four books each over 600 pages with fairly small print, it might be time to get rid of some of the scope of the book. But, maybe the last two books will bring it all together in a way that leaves me unable to decide what could have been cut.

I do really enjoy Williams’ writing style most of the time. The middle of the book dragged pretty badly because of the world hopping I mentioned, but then the last quarter of the book picked up pace quite nicely.

If the book didn’t wow me, I was planning on bailing on the rest of the books, but I was interested enough at the end to where I am looking forward to reading book three sometime in the near future.

I haven’t read him before, but really long books tire me out. haha. Hopefully the next books pull the series all together!
