You would be such a bad character in a book. Don’t start yelling at me. I would be a horrible book character, too. Us people of the real world are boring and anal.
When was the last time the hero or heroine of a book or movie or rap video that you liked did any of the following:
- Made a list to keep track of what food they ate that day
- Made a list of the books they have read since finishing high school
- Made a spreadsheet to keep track of how many pushups, situps, and miles running they completed that day
- Added a sidebar widget to keep track of how many words they have left to finish in their 80,000 word novel
- Kept a list to keep track of all the things they have to do to keep their house clean
- Made a list of their online passwords
When did so many people become so obsessed with keeping track of all the things they are doing to where it starts to become difficult just to keep all the lists up to date.
When did we convince ourselves that humans are capable of being good multitaskers as long as we just write down all the things we want to/need to/would like to do.
Time to go cross “Post something on the internet” off of my list.
On an unrelated note, since this is Valentine’s week and all, did you ever read my Valentine’s Day story. I highly recommend printing it, but hold off on reading it until Wednesday and then read it out loud in bed to your significant other. It’s some good romantic crap and even ends while fading into a sex scene.

I’ve got one. Weird Al Yankovic in White and Nerdy.
lol, great valentine’s story, Mike! And yanno, those characteristics could be beefed into a character with OCD, heh. =D
I actually have a story idea for a pretty boring character that I think is pretty interesting. It’s still at that “wouldn’t it be neat to write about somebody like this” phase, though. No actual plot yet. Just a character trait.
The point is to look beneath the banal characteristics and get to the true inner person. We all have fears (like of people finding out we make lists of lists – as you did in this post) and most of us have a conflict in who we try to portray to the world and who we really are.
I think the characteristic of making lists upon lists is very telling of the protag. What those lists are of would be even more revealing.
What about a list of dialogue tags not to use? A character who did that would be VERY interesting indeed.
LOL
