Writing Sample – 2/16/07

Another weird week.  Monday we went to Ikea to buy beds for the kids.  They ended up to be to big to buy because the kids were with us and we needed to take their seat out to fit the beds in the car.  So, I made a plan to get over later in the week to pick them up.

Tuesday it snowed and snowed and snowed.  It took me 2 1/2 hours to get to work.  Then, after work I was supposed to bowl for Rebecca in her work league.  It took me 1 1/2 hours to get to the bowling alley.  Only to find out that they cancelled.  I bowled a few games anyway to stay inside until after everybody else got home.  Then it still took another hour or so to get home.

Wednesday the snow was still all over the roads so the commute into work still took 1 1/2 hours.  I managed to hurt my knee pretty badly bowling, so I rested after work.

Tonight, I went back to Ikea, picked up the beds, and then assembled them before the kids went to bed.   By the way, they love their new big kid beds.  Prior to this they had those Thomas the Tank Engine beds that used their old crib mattresses.  Their new beds are twins which look absolutely huge when they are in them.

I jotted down notes to a bunch of short stories that I am planning on working into a novel of sorts.  The entire project will be a fantasy novel of sorts, but definitely not normal dungeons and dragons fantasy.  It will probably be closer to a Weaveworld feel.  I came up with very brief descriptions of 11 stories.  I would like to see each story end up around 30 pages and then use 8-10 of them in the final book.  We’ll see how it goes.

I also started writing a little bit of what may be the first story in the book.  It will definitely be one of the first ones.  Besides details, I wrote down a couple quick paragraphs at some point.  Here they are.  Unedited and full of glory.  Or something like that.

I sniffed her butt again.  I’m not really sure why but when I get nervous it really helps to keep me calm.  She smacked my nose away again.  Like most people, when she’s nervous, the last thing she wants is a wolf’s nose in her ass.

We never liked these moments before we put our lives at risk no matter how much practice we had.

So, the wolf is not just a wolf.  And, it is not a werewolf at all.  It’s my own made up creature…I think.  There both tough and very good at what they do.  But, today they are vastly outnumbered and in a pretty difficult pinch.  All because of a little, teeny baby and a great big flood.  I’m really in the mood to pick main characters that can handle a difficult situation…and then keep kicking them harder for a while and see how they handle it.

I’m tired…I’m actually typing this late Thursday night and scheduling it to post on Friday, so please forgive grammar and spelling.  Or pick on it.  Whichever you prefer.

Good beginning/snippet. Good luck with it.

My body is sore from dealing with all the snow, though I’m glad we finally had a real snow storm. Now, Punxy Phil can be correct and Spring can arrive.

All that time wasted on the road is so sad. I wish you could take that time relaxing instead…or maybe you and your radio are relaxing in your commute….tell me it is so. Love MOM

I do like my Sirius radio and normally it really does make the commute much more endurable. Unfortunately, last week I had to take the minivan to work so I could make a couple attempts at picking up the new kids beds.
