I'm trying to participate in more after-hours work functions. I'm a consultant so I very rarely see my other coworkers since I don't normally attend things that are scheduled outside of my work hours. During my review one of my goals for the year was to attend two work functions so I can get to know more people and let them get to know me.

My company happens to be participating in the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge in Chicago later this month. So I had them sign me up.

I have very mixed feelings on this event, and both are based on my current fitness level.

Kalbzayn's Race Day (Chapter 2)

Kalbzayn liked to race. He had been training hard for the last couple months and was ready to showcase his improvement. He elbowed to the front of the pack at the starting line. A lion among deer, he looked down at the tops of the heads of the diminutive front packers trying to determine which scalps he would collect today.

Kalbzayn Runs

Kalbzayn liked to run, preferably in the calm of night. The cool breeze and rustling leaves eased the tension of the day. The left, right, left numbed the worries of tomorrow.

"Run, Forrest, run," shouted a teenager from a passing pickup truck that sounded short one muffler.

Kalbzayn waved and raised a finger to let them know he thought they were number one. Oops. Wrong finger. Better get moving.

John rubbed his hand across his stomach. He had weighed in at a record 206 pounds that morning, fifty pounds more than he had weighed four years ago. “October 22, 2006.”

I decided to try setting the treadmill at a faster speed. Sometimes I think that running too slowly actually ends up hurting me more. So I changed from 6mph to 7mph. I ran 3.16 miles in 30 minutes. I walked 5 of the minutes. My legs are a little tired today, but my knees and ankles feel just fine.

I'm only running about 5 minute blocks right now. I'm not sure if I could make it with 10 minute blocks. Maybe I'll run an easier day tomorrow and then try to do 10 minute blocks with 2 minutes of rest between them.

My knee is feeling fine and my ankle felt much looser today than it has been. It still isn't 100% ready yet, but getting close.

I ran 2.75 miles in 30 minutes on the treadmill. I walked 5 of the minutes. My left knee felt fairly well during the run. My right ankle is still a little tight.

I'm thinking about buying some flats in the next couple of weeks and slowly working those into my training. I've read good and bad about them and figure the only way I'll ever know how the work for me is to use them. Since I'm at a point where I'm still taking a lot of walk breaks, it seems like it would be a good time to try to make the switch.

I ran 2.5 miles in 30 minutes. Quite a bit of walking. Probably 10-12 minutes. My legs were tired from being in the car all day to watch Iowa lose in the closing seconds at Northwestern, I guess.

I watched Flight of the Osiris, the Animatrix short, during my run tonight. That is some pretty jazzy animation. I should probably rent the Animatrix video. Maybe if I see all of those, I'll be able to find some way to appreciate the last two Matrix movies a little better.

I ran 2.65 miles on the treadmill in 30 minutes while watching the Matrix 2. I happened to walk in during the scene where Neo fights all of the Agent Smith's after talking to the Oracle. As much as I didn't really like the 2nd and 3rd episode, that fight scene was pretty amazing.

3 days down, 27 to go.

I can't wait until I am done with the walk breaks. It is hard to get in a real groove when I have to constantly switch between running and walking every few minutes.

I ran 2.56 miles in 30 minutes. I walked 9 minutes total. Felt a lot better than yesterday in my right ankle. I still need to go very slowly because of my left knee.

So two days down, 28 to go.
